DRY EYE DISEASE - CAUSE N AND TREATMENT

DRY EYE DISEASE - CAUSE N AND TREATMENT

Dry eye is the most common but easily ignored. Still, in severe cases, dry eyes will reduce vision, potentially leading to blindness.

Usually, tears are produced by the tear glands on the edge of your eyelids (meibomian glands). Dry eyes can occur when one of the following two causes:

  1. Decreased tear production: the amount of tears excreted by the tear glands is reduced in quantity or quality due to aging, women in menopause, some diseases such as allergic eye disease, systemic diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren's syndrome, and so on.
  2. Increased tears evaporation: due to clogged oil produced by meibomian glands, eyelids problem in closing and blink less often. People working in an environment with high temperature, wind, and light can also have a higher risk of evaporating tears.

Dry eye is the most common disease, but it is also mostly ignored because people often underestimate the condition, and the symptoms are usually very mild. However, if it is not diagnosed and treated promptly, it will significantly affect the patient's quality of life.

Initially, the dry eye only indicates mild symptoms such as burning, stinging, and reddish eyes. These symptoms appear intermittent. If not treated, the above symptoms will occur more often. In the worse case, it reduces vision and affects the patient's life, study, and labor.

Patients will feel uncomfortable or dazzled, are afraid of light, and cannot open their eyes. More severe, dry eyes will impair vision, potentially leading to blindness.
