CATARACT PREVENTION
Until now, there is no proven method that can prevent or delay cataract. However, there are several things you can do to reduce your risk or support cataract treatment.
Cataract prevention
Get your eyes checked regularly. A regular eye examination can help detect cataracts and other eye problems while they are at the early stages. It would be best if you had your eyes checked once a year, especially in patients over 50 years old with a high risk for cataract.
Give up smoking. Cigarettes damage the lens and have adverse effects on other eye structures and other organs such as the heart and lungs. Try to reduce and work on quitting before it's too late.
Understand and control other health problems. Follow treatment if you have diabetes. Also, different types of systemic disease can increase your chances of having a cataract.
Design a healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables. Adding colorful fruits and vegetables to your diet helps you get all the nutrients and vitamins you need. Fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants, which are beneficial for eye health.
So far, no studies have proven that antioxidants can prevent cataract. But, there is a fair amount of recent research showing that a diet rich in vitamins and minerals can reduce cataract risk.
Fruits and vegetables are very healthy and safe to increase the amount of minerals and vitamins in your diet.
Wear sunglasses when going out. The UV rays emitted from the sun can make your eyes vulnerable to cataract. Sunglasses can protect you from those harmful rays, so don't forget to wear them when going out during the day!
Cut down on alcohol. Drinking too much can increase the risk of cataract.
